The Five Elements or Five Transformations
The Five Elements system was devised to organize chi expression by general characteristics. Each individual "Element" suggests a state of being or character of chi expression, and each element is associated with specific organ systems that showed that character. For example, the heart has the character of the element fire, while the stomach has the character of earth. These elements interact with each other in a creative or destructive cycle as the body naturally moves through its function and phases of life. (See image below)
Organ systems associated with seasons, colors, characteristics and even flavors make up each individual Element. The outer circle shows the Creative Cycle, while the inner circle shows the Destructive Cycle; balanced expression of Chi, whether "Creative" or "Destructive" allows all elements to express appropriately for optimum health.
SHIATSU FAQ's
What will happen during my first Shiatsu treatment?
First, John will inquire about your health and your goals for the session, while collecting a relevant health history. Second, John will lay on hands to complete diagnosis and begin treatment. You are now into your soothing, relaxing and healing experience.
Will it be painful?
Shiatsu addresses your body's chi through acupoints which can at times be very sensitive. However, pain is generally not relaxing and so is avoided during treatment. Where there may be a "hurts-so-good" treatment aspect to your session, this treatment approach will be introduced gradually and with constant feedback so that the pressure is correct for you.
What should I wear?
Preferably you should wear clothes that are loose, comfortable, and made from natural fabrics - cotton, silk, hemp fibre etc. - as these allow your skin to breathe.
How many treatments will I need?
This will depend on your reasons for receiving Shiatsu. If you are in relatively good health and diagnosis suggests a simple energy balancing tune-up, one treatment should suffice. If you are trying to regain health from specific illness or injury, then usually a longer course of treatments is recommended. Typically, we recommend a series of 3 to 5 sessions with a break or period of adjustment to assess the effects of treatment.
Can I learn to help myself between treatments?
Whenever appropriate, you will be encouraged to undertake Chi "reinforcing and supporting" homework on your own. This could vary from light meridian stretches and exercises specific to your condition to the practice of Chi Kung and/or Tai Chi, meditation, breathing and relaxation techniques. Frequently, your health goals can also be reinforced and supported by feng shui interventions in the home or workplace.
How much will a treatment cost and how long will it last?
Typically, your first treatment will be 90 minutes, including the initial discussion of your health. Full treatments after that will last for 60 or 75 minutes, depending on your case. Full treatments cost from $75.00 to 90.00 per session and are set on a sliding scale. When working with specific injuries or conditions that require repeat sessions, package deal options are available.
We hope everyone can share in shiatsu’s "Touch for Peace". Special cases can be discussed. We pledge that everyone with a will to heal and to add peace to our world will be accepted to receive treatment that they can afford.
